Exquisite Tang Dynasty Sancai-Glazed Pottery Horse (7th–10th Century)

Dimensions: 20.5"W x 7.5"D x 15.25"H (52.07cm * 19.05cm * 38.74cm)

A sancai (three-color glazed) horse from the Tang Dynasty (7th-10th centuries). The horse stands still, its head lowered and slightly tilted to the right, its expression serene and gentle, as if it were foraging or resting. The modeling is accurate, with strong muscularity, demonstrating the realistic techniques of Tang Dynasty sculpture.

The horse is covered primarily in brown, green, and white glazes, the colors blending and flowing seamlessly. The glaze surface has fine crackles and a warm, lustrous sheen. The base is an unglazed earthenware slab, revealing the yellowish-brown clay body underneath. The horse's lowered head posture depicts a moment of rest after a strenuous march or labor, conveying both fatigue and a restrained strength—a more realistic and vivid portrayal than a horse with its head held high and neighing.
