According to records, Chai Kiln was founded in Zhengzhou (some say Kaifeng), Henan Province in the early years of Xiande of the Later Zhou Dynasty (954). It was originally the imperial kiln of Chai Rong, Emperor Shizong of the Later Zhou Dynasty, so it was called Chai Kiln from the Northern Song Dynasty. However, no actual objects and kiln sites have been found so far, so it is not among the five famous kilns recognized in the contemporary era (Jun kiln, Ru kiln, Guan kiln, Ge kiln, and Ding kiln).
